Pillows 1
IURI SHUBLADZE
This papier-mâché sculpture depicts a whimsical stack of five decorative cushions, balanced in a tall, slightly leaning tower. Each pillow is a diamond shape with a small tassel at every corner, exaggerating the softness and luxury of real textiles in a solid, sculpted form.
From bottom to top, the pillows shift in color and pattern: deep burgundy and teal with circular motifs; dark grey with angular metallic shapes; black with bold blue and green geometric lines; white and turquoise stripes; and finally a bright blue cushion with playful circular designs. The contrast of rigid material and “soft” subject, along with the precarious stacking, gives the piece a lively, playful energy—like a fairy-tale pile of magic cushions frozen in mid-wobble.
